My 99 day hot vinyasa yoga challenge was inspired by my dad who often does 100 day Bikram yoga challenges (he once did a 365 day challenge…go dad!).
A 99 day yoga challenge is not for everyone. If you’re new to yoga, I recommend the traditional 25-30 day yoga challenge. If you are in good health, already practice yoga regularly, and are looking to get out of a rut and make a radical change, I highly recommend taking on a 99 day yoga challenge…the results are priceless.
Day 45 of my 99 day hot yoga challenge, and I have learned a few things that in all my 14 years of practicing yoga I did not know. Below I will list the things I have learned and specific hot yoga benefits that can come from a regular hot vinyasa yoga practice.
10 Hot Yoga Benefits I Have Experienced
1. You Will Lose Weight
2. You Can Achieve The Ellusive “Yoga Butt”
This deserves its own category. After 45 days of uncountable warriors, lunges, chair pose, balancing on one leg, and using my glutes to get me into various handstands; I have achieved the ellusive yoga butt I so remember from my 20s. Regular yoga practice CAN give you a natural butt lift. It’s alot of work, but it can happen and the results are glorious.
3. You Will Want To Make Healthy Choices
When your life is devoted for 3 months to a hot yoga challenge, you start to notice what happens to your body when you make “bad choices” in eating and drinking. I have no desire to drink alcohol anymore…even one glass I can feel the next day in my yoga practice. It is so much easier to make healthy eating decisions as well. It’s really a no brainer.
4. Your Skin Will Shine…Bye Bye Baggy Eyes
When you sweat for an hour a day in a sauna like room, your skin is getting its own workout. You are really getting rid of toxins and allowing your beautiful skin to shine through. It’s very important to drink enough water. I found that my normal dark circles under my eyes were no longer a problem even if I did not get enough sleep the night before. My skin is clear, glowing, and my under eyes look amazing.
5. You Will Find A Vast Ammount Of Peace And Calm…After The Storm!
You’re going to be trudging up alot of emotions that have been buried in certain parts of your body…so be ready for a storm of confusion, self doubt, etc etc! But! There is a vast amount of peace and tranquility after the storm. So, you have that to look forward to.
6. You Can Conquer Those Hard Arm Balances
We all have those “cool” yoga arm balances that we wish we could achieve. I”m not saying you’ll master every one of them…but in a yoga challenege like this, you will come close to mastering at least one of them. I’m happy to say I have begun to master 8 Angle – Yeah! And my flying splits are looking super fly.
7. You Will Become Addicted To Inversions
I’ve always loved inversions, but during this challenge I crave my inversions like one might crave coffee. By 6pm class I am doing inversions before class even starts. Scorpion is my current addiction.
8. Injuries Can Be Sometimes Be Healed With Modified Careful Practice
You really have to listen to your body in yoga. Your teacher is your guide and it is your choice where your body goes…25% into the pose or 100% into the pose. Everyday your body is different. I did this challenge with an ankle injury for 3 days. I extremely modified my practice during those 3 days: first before class I stood on my leg and noticed where the strain really was and then during class I modified any pose that put any strain on my ankle. Within 3 days my ankle was great, and I was back to my normal practice.
9. You Will Love Yourself, And You Will Love The World
It’s true what they say you must love yourself first in order to love anyone else. Yoga is a great way to love yourself…you are really getting to know your body and honoring it’s achievements and limitations. In yoga we say Namaste: the divine light in me honors the divine light in you. After 45 days into my journey, I can honestly say I have never loved myself more, and I am truly able to see the beauty and love inside even the most difficult situations.
10. You Have The Time For Yourself
I was always finding excuses for why I couldn’t make it to yoga class or go on a run. This challenge has made me commit to myself and find the time no matter what. Painful at first, the most convenient yoga time for my schedule happens to be at 6am. I now love waking up when it’s dark, and heading over to the studio at 5:30am. It is a special moment of my day, truly honoring myself and pushing myself to make the changes I wish to see in my world. Even if you think you don’t have the time, we all have the time with just a little bit of creativity and scheduling!
